Final project for the year - Cockfield Village

This is a final project for this year. I have to transform a old community centre into 4 bedroom house within the existing structure. Client wants to have an art studio, living and dining area and a garden. 

This Detached stone built former chapel is situated in the heart of Cockfield Village . The village has primary school and local shops. It is a conservation area so all the exchange of the exterior have to be consulted with a local council.  Its large building. Its overall net internal area is 139.25sq.m. (1498.3sq.ft.) At the beginning of  May we went there to see the property which we are going to design. Below you will find pictures which I took on that day. 

The interior of the building is destroyed and need to be completely renovated.  

As you can see some of a feature are Gothic style like windows at the front and sides and the small windows above them.    

There will be create a upper level which client wants to be use for Bedrooms.  

In the past there was added stone build extension to the back of the building to provide kitchen, refectory and toilet facilities. 

Building Regulations, Stairs- Basic dimensions

Well designer stairs should be created in way which fallow certain rules and can  guarantee safety and comfort to their user. 

  

Width and rise: 

Width and rise must be adequate to the length of human step. Which is  60-65 cm.

If we want to change a width of the stair  we have to change the rise of the stairs too. Connection with those two should be 2r + w = 60 -65.

Where w is width in cm and r is rise.

The correct rise of the stairs inside the buildings is: 

 20 cm for stairs which leading to the attic or to the basement

19 cm in single  family house and two floor flats

16 cm in the public buildings

17,5 cm in other cases

Number of stairs

In one row there shouldn’t be more than 18 stairs. The reason is the health and safety of their  users. One row should have from 9  to 12 stairs. Stairs which are located inside the building shouldn't have less than 3 stair because it’s easy to fall over.

Pitch 

 The angle between the pitch line (notional line connecting nosings) and the horizontal. The maximum pitch for domestic stairs is 42°, semi-public stairs, eg factories, offices and common stairs serving more than one dwelling, 38° and public stairs, eg places of public assembly, 33°.

Ken Currie Shot Boy

This staggering painting which  was inspired by a news paper report of urban violence.  It presents a young boy who  had been shot dead.  Ken Currie shows the boy suspended in time ,his spirit hovering between life and death. Currie intended the boy’s damaged body to represent the damaged society in which it could happen. Currie was born and brought up in North Shields and later became one of the Glasgow School of Artist. Currently you can see it in Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle.

John martin used oil, watercolours and prints to create painting which are shown on this really amazing expiation which makes you disbelieve that all those painting were painted paint by one artist.  He really cares about details with professional finish and large size of the drawings  makes these paintings so realistic that it makes you believe you are a real observer of those occurrences. Some of the painting show landscapes but most of them are about Old Testament scenes of doom and destruction. One of my favourite is a painting called Belshazzar’s Feast the destruction of Sodom and Gomorra and the Day of Judgement the first one you can see in a special created room whit a sound effects and lights which create an incredible atmosphere.

Good program for rendering Kerkythea

Kerkythea is It’s a free adds which you can use with a sketch up program.  This rendering application able you to create a good quality imagines in a very short period of time, which look really photo-realistic. It improve the realism of materials and give you possibility to create natural looking light effects.  It also let to export those pictures and able user to open it on other computer where the sketch up isn’t install.

Front

Front is a design group including four women located in Stockholm, Sweden. They use latest technologies to produce  unique things.  They find an inspiration in animal world, art, fashion and movies. Their project are original, innovative and extravagant.  I think they choice a right way to achieve a success in design world. Below I present their work which for me are the most interesting projects. 

Those furniture came into existence by technique developed by Front. This method let them materialize free hand sketches. Here is a description of the technique; ,, Pen strokes made in the air are recorded with Motion Capture and become 3D digital files; these are then materialised through Rapid Prototyping into real pieces of furniture. 

 

One of the newest collection is magical. The key-stone was to make some of the object disappear  to accomplish magical effect.  

 

 

Design by Animals is collection which was actually designed by dogs, cats, rats, snakes and beetles. Above lamp was create by fly circling around the lamp. It was recorded by motion capture and materialise into a lampshade.   

Lamp  which responds to your movements.  It wakes up to brighten the room when you enter , and lays down when you exit.
